Data breach

How do we deal with this?

  • Strategy
  • Technology

Volta complies with Belgian and European data protection legislation, even when there are changes to that legislation. Specifically, we follow the recommendations of the Privacy Commission (www.privacycommission.be).

Volta takes a preventive approach

And pays close attention to the secure storage of personal data:

  • Data encryption: data are secured according to the latest technologies and standards.
  • Passwords and other sensitive data are stored encrypted, making them unintelligible to third parties in the event of a data breach.
  • As little personal data as possible is stored.
  • Access to sensitive data is restricted as much as possible. Only when necessary are administrators given access to personal data.
  • Latest security updates of software packages used (CMS, server software, etc.) are always carried out as quickly as possible.
  • Web servers are secured as much as possible and server logs are monitored so that attempted break-ins or hacking are detected at an early stage.

In case of a breach of personal data, volta follows the following procedure:

  • The breach will be closed immediately after detection. We may have to take the service or website offline briefly to do so.
  • We will inform you, the customer, of what happened.
  • We will also immediately inform our hosting provider Combell. Volta has concluded the highest Service Level Agreements with Combell, whereby Combell is available 24/7.
  • The leak is reported to the Privacy Commission as soon as possible and always within 48 hours.
  • If non-encrypted, sensitive data were leaked, the people concerned are also informed about the leak. In doing so, we follow the recommendations of the Privacy Commission.
  • Volta analyses cause of leak and adjusts security of applications or services based on this.

The person responsible for secure data storage at volta is Joris Janssens. Steven Bruyneel bears ultimate responsibility.
