Making scenography revel in elegance
For the high-profile exhibition ‘100x Congo’, volta developed a graphic concept that matched the atmosphere of the exhibition. In close consultation with the MAS, the exhibition texts were also edited and designed.
From 18 June to 9 November 2020, the exhibition 100x Congo was shown at the MAS in Antwerp, or Museum aan de Stroom. The museum wanted to enhance the exhibition with gallery texts to inform visitors in a clear and pleasant way. The MAS found the perfect partner for the design of these texts in volta.
Strong scenography is crucial to the atmosphere of an exhibition. For a high-profile exhibition such as 100x Congo, we opted for a design for the exhibition texts that gave extra power to the content and message.
Prestigious exhibition
A hundred years ago, during the height of colonialism, the city of Antwerp acquired a Congolese collection. The exhibition 100x Congo showcased a hundred eye-catching pieces.
For this exhibition, the MAS collaborated with Belgian and Congolese artists, filmmakers and researchers. The museum engaged in dialogue with Antwerp residents of Belgian and African descent. This exhibition was voted “International Exhibition of the Year” at the British Museums & Heritage Awards.
Warmth, strength and depth
For 100x Congo, our designers developed a graphic concept that matched the exhibition on Congolese art in Antwerp. The designers worked closely with the scenographer, the MAS staff and the exhibition producer. Within the guidelines of the corporate identity, we looked for stylistic elements to visually enhance the whole.
A colour palette with earth tones and a bold font immediately gave the exhibition a warm atmosphere. Combined with white letters on a dark background, this created an atmospheric backdrop in the dark exhibition space.
One thing leads to another
When the MAS opened its doors in 2011, our studio was given the mission to develop their corporate identity and launch everything with a marketing campaign. We were also asked to develop all graphic communications.
As the MAS's regular design partner, we naturally created all the derivatives of the corporate identity, but we also took care of the internal signage in addition to the hundreds of brochures, flyers, posters and campaign images for numerous exhibitions and expos.
